Overview

“Heritage & Horizons” is an annual talent exhibition dedicated to celebrating the art, culture, and heritage of people of African descent. This vibrant event focuses on fostering a deep connection between young people of African Descent born and raised in Canada and elders from various African countries. Through this inter-generational exchange, participants will explore the rich cultural traditions and artistic expressions of Africa, while celebrating contemporary interpretations and innovations. The exhibition will serve as a platform for showcasing talent, preserving cultural heritage, and building a strong, unified community”

Objectives

  • Cultural Exchange and Preservation: To provide a platform for young Canadians of African descent to learn about their cultural roots from elders, ensuring the preservation and transmission of African cultural heritage.
  • Talent Nurturing and Showcase: To develop and showcase the artistic talents of individuals of African descent, highlighting their contributions to the cultural landscape.

Structure and Activities:

  • Community Cohesion and Dialogue: To foster inter-generational connections, promote dialogue, and build a sense of community and belonging among people of African descent.
  • Celebration of Diversity and Innovation: To celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds within the African diaspora and encourage contemporary interpretations of traditional art forms.

Structure and Activities:

The event will feature a dynamic mix of activities designed to engage participants and attendees, including:

  1. Cultural Workshops and Masterclasses: Elders and cultural practitioners from different African countries will lead workshops in traditional arts such as drumming, dance, storytelling, visual arts, and more. These sessions will provide hands-on learning opportunities, allowing young participants to immerse themselves in various cultural practices.
  2. Youth Talent Showcase: Young artists, musicians, dancers, and performers will have the opportunity to present their work. Categories will include Best Performance, Best Visual Art, Best Cultural Presentation, and more. The ceremony will also recognize elders for their invaluable role in preserving and transmitting cultural knowledge.
