About the summit
This summit aims to implement the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent Initiative (UNIDPADI-CNAP) 2015-2024 as passed under UN resolution 68/237. In February 2014, the United Nations declared the year 2015-2024 the International Decade for People of African Descent (IDPAD). The IDPAD recognizes that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected. It also inaugurated an action plan, the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent Initiative (UNIDPADI-CNAP) 2015-2024 Action Plan. The UN called on all member nations, civil society organizations, state, regional, and municipal institutions to help implement the action plan in their various jurisdictions.
The African Descent Ontario in partnership with African Descent Society British Columbia and their partners propose to complement efforts by the Canadian government and Provincial governments, as well as other civic society organizations (CSOs) to take more concrete the action plan to implement the international Decade for people of African Descent in all parts of Canada. Both the African Descent Ontario and African Descent British Columbia have mandate from the UNIDPAD to implement its action plan in Canada and aims to operationalize the three core themes of the IDPADI, namely, Recognition, Social Justice, and Development.
